About Bee Understanding

Our Mission at Bee Understanding is to educate, raise awareness and demystify the honey bee for children while helping them to form a connection to nature.

The sustainability of the world we live in will be determined by what we do now with the young people growing up. If children can understand the importance of the bees and how bees work together, this understanding can potentially deepen their connection and relationship with their community and the world around them.

What is the buzz all about? We do in-school, in-house and in-camp field trips where children learn all about the life of a hive, jobs in the hive, pollination, and more! We bring a live observation hive, honeycombs, beeswax, and every child get s honey straw too! Give us a call to find out more or contact us using the form up above.

Wonderful Presentation

I would like to thank "Bee Understanding" for the wonderful presentation on June 30th! Students, parents, and teachers were so impressed with Mr. Al Salopek's, outstanding performance. The students were so engaged and talked about all the amazing things they learned about the honey bees. We followed up with a writing activity and art project and to my own amazement, I was very impressed with the students new knowledge of honey bees. I could tell from their writing how much information they retained. We are planning to create a wall ( in the shape of a honeycomb with the students writing and honey bee art projects, I will be sure to send them a picture of our finished product . I cannot thank you enough for the outstanding presentation. Our students seldom participate in presentations/activities like yours and it solidified the importance of enriching students experiences. I will definitely be sharing your information with area schools!

Visit to PK at Dwight D. Eisenhower Elementary School

The BEEUNDERSTANDING PROGRAM Al and Keely presented to our nearly 200 PK students was amazing, engaging, and enlightening! Some student comments were 'Now I'm not afraid of bees' and 'Look - I have my bee suit on with my smoker' (using a dress up work vest and toy watering can as props). Students were doing bee searches at playground time, being careful to watch the work of the bees without touching. It really sparked and interest and curiosity, and calmed fears students had learned; and the skit Al performed to include the students as a members of the bee hive was set up to be memorable by using props familiar to students that related to the job each bee has. A big "THANK YOU" and hoping we get the chance to do it again for next year's classes!

Wonderful Presentation

What a wonderful presentation. The kids loved it and the adults were very impressed. We talked it up all day to our colleagues. Our students are sending thank you notes with all the information that they had learned. I write an education blog called I'm Not Miss Beadle and I'm including the link to the post I just wrote about today's presentation. I put Bee Understanding link in hopes they get some referrals. Again, thanks so much! We plan on scheduling with them again next year.

High Recommendation

I would love to give you a high recommendation on your website. Seriously, he is the best guest speaker we have had in 20 years. He was animated but highly engaging while teaching our firsties a lot about honey bees. We have noticed that a lot of people know their subject area well but don't know how to present it to little kids. I am sending their honey stick home for them to eat-they are so excited to taste it. Thanks again for a wonderful presentation. Gwen L.

Binks Forest Elementary School Second Grade

The Bee Understanding program is great! Our 172 second graders were engaged, learning, and having fun. Al does a wonderful job of explaining each bees job and why it's important for the hive's success. This is the second time Al has visited our school. We plan on making it an annual event!

Amazzzing!

We are a local homeschool group and hosting an assembly is new to us. Nothing could have been better than setting it up with kind hearted Keely. Then Al came in and knocked our socks off with his kid energizing presentation. Nobody could stop talking about Bee Understandings ingenuity, humor and ability to pack us full of interesting bee information. We can't wait to have them back again!

Awesome Field Trip

The Kids and Teachers loved it! Al was very knowledgeable about Bees and had a great answer for every question the kids had. Our students came up with some great questions. Al kept all 200 students actively engaged the whole time by the way he interacted with them. He involved many students in his presentation. The children got to see the Bees up close and loved to see part of the Bee hive. They got to ask many questions when he came back to the classroom with a smaller group of students. The field trip was very well organized from beginning (planning stages) to the end with the presentation . I would Highly recommend Bee Understanding as a great in house field trip. We Can't wait to do it again next year.

Absolutely Wonderful!!!

Al, from Bee Understanding, came to my school for a Kindergarten through 2nd grade presentation. The kids and teachers LOVED it!!! The interactive nature of the presentation really got the kids' attention and they were very eager to participate. Al was very knowledgeable and knew just how to get the attention of approx. 250 K-2 children. They then had the opportunity to get up close with the observation hive and were very excited to get to watch the bees in action. I would highly recommend Bee Understanding. Al's wife, Keely, was a wonderful help while scheduling the presentation. She was wonderful to speak to and email with as well She was very prompt in responding and very organized! This was one of the best in-school field trips we have ever had!

Very happy repeat customers

We invite Bee Understanding to our school for a visit with our 4th graders every spring and it is one of the highlights of the year. The program is not only educational, but lots of fun too! We teach plant reproduction and this fits our curriculum perfectly. Al is wonderful with the kids and the program provides an important lesson on the importance of taking care of our most vital pollinators.
